Giant Burrowing Cockroaches
![]() Aim: To find out information to help me better care for my pet giant burrowing cockroach.
Outcome: This is what I found out.
General Information:
Some of the largest cockroaches in the world are found in Australia. The Giant Burrowing Cockroach, can grow to 80 mm and weigh 30 grams. They are found in Northern Australia and are most active at night when they come out of their burrows to forage for food. During the day they stay in their burrows. Unlike introduced species they cause no problems in houses due to their specific habitat requirements. They are wingless and construct burrows underground, sometimes as deep as 1 metre, which have a food chamber and a living chamber which are connected by tunnels. They can live for up to 7 years. The young stay with their parents for up to 3 months.
Care And Feeding:
The cockroaches should be kept in an aquarium with sandy soil about 50 mm deep, with a piece of bark on top of the soil so they can be seen during the day by lifting up the wood. The soil should be covered with a layer of dead eucalypt leaves as they feed on them. As occasional treats you can add lettuce or grass. They must have a dish of clean water available as well, but make sure the dish is not to deep as they will fall in and drown. (My Tip- Use cotton wool in the dish to prevent them drowning.)
(NOTE: DON'T USE POTTING MIX AS A SUBSTRATE AS THIS CONTAINS PHOSPHATES WHICH CAN HARM THEM)
