WHAT IS CREST???
CREST is offered by CSIRO Education Programs. It is a Project of National Significance supported by the Commonwealth Department of Employment, Education and Training. It is also supported by State and Territory Education Departments.
![]() CREST provides secondary and tertiary students with a nationally accredited award for completing experimental science or technology projects. Students choose, carry out and evaluate their own project with guidance from a teacher/supervisor. Extensive written support material is provided together with professional development for teachers and supervisors.
CREST is offered at Bronze, Silver or Gold levels depending on the amount of time involved and the complexity of the project. Students who are seeking Silver and Gold Awards are encouraged to work with mentors form the local community. External assessors assist with the valuation of projects.
Students gaining CREST Awards must demonstrate that they have been CREATIVE, that they have PERSEVERED and that they have carried out experimental research into a topic which has APPLICATIONS in the everyday world.
![]() When students meet the CREST criteria, their efforts are rewarded by the presentation of an attractive certificate and a medallion.
Students work on their projects individually or in small groups. Each student has their progress monitored and recorded by their teacher/supervisor throughout their project work.
Teachers have an integral role in the CREST program as - facilitators, coaches, consultants, mentors and assessors.
The outcomes of the CREST projects are closely aligned with the outcomes described in the "Working Scientifically" Strand of the Statement on Science for Australian Schools and the "Design, Make and Appraise" Strand of the Statement on Technology for Australian Schools. These are valid and valuable outcomes for all Science and Technology teachers.
